A new law signed by California’s governor on Monday limits tackle practice for young football players and requires a week on the bench after a concussion.

The law, which takes effect on Jan. 1, applies to players in all middle schools and high schools in the state, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The law allows only two, 90-minute full-contact practices during the season and preseason, and none during the off season.

The law also requires school coaches to keep players off the field for at least a week after a concussion.

Some coaches fear the limits will lead to more dangerous tackles because youths won’t have enough time to practice safe procedures. Other coaches praise the law as a way to make the game safer.

Several states have taken steps to limit head injuries in football, the story says. In Texas, full-contact practice is allowed only once a week in a 90-minute session.
